CounterAssualt® is a program that was created to to go after and assualt a hacker's computer files and folders. It does this by receaving the hackers IP address from the one firewall running on your computer. CounterAssualt is supported with a database of 98 firewalls which all can send IP's and other data to CounterAssualt. After this the choosen bot is released and hunts the hacker down using his IP address. Port scans are not effected by these bots. How many bots are there you ask 2 each are the same but the Radiation bot attacks System32 files on microsoft NT, Me, 2000, and XP. The Atlas bot targets folders created by the hacker or the user of his computer, It will be selling for about 10 USD. It will br for sale in mid-September.

Well posted earlier, we mentioned those "script kiddies" from yazzak.tk, and crackas.org, about them posting a forwarding java script in our news.

Well we sent them a little email, regarding the matters of Cyber Interenet Crimes, which they have carried out. Penalties, which include a MINIMUM fine of $200,000 USD, and up to 5 years in jail. Well, I hope we taught them a good lesson in correlation with issues in Internet Crimes, and today's legal matters.

Now I believe we did because their websites no longer exist! Damn script kiddies. When will they learn, to be creative and constructive, and not destruction?

xstem: FBI seeks public’s help to track down virus
PHP-NukeBy Wilson P. Dizard III GCN Staff The FBI today urged Internet users to protect themselves against the SoBig and MSBlaster viruses and asked for help from the public in tracking down their creators. “Protecting the nation’s cyber infrastructure is a top priority for the FBI, and we are working with the Department of Homeland Security and with state and local law enforcement on our Cyber Task Force to track down the perpetrators of SoBig and the recent W32/Blaster worm,” FBI director Robert S. Mueller III said. “We employ the latest technology and code analysis to direct us to potential sources, and I am confident that we will find the culprits.” The FBI urged computer users who connect to the Internet to update their antivirus software and install appropriate patches. “Computer users should also exercise caution in opening any e-mails or attachments from unknown persons or companies,” the bureau said in a prepared statement. Users with a computer already affected by malicious code should contact their Internet service provider for assistance, the bureau said. “Anyone with information about the origins of SoBig, W32/Blaster or other malicious code should contact their local FBI office,” said Jana Monroe, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division.

 xstem: Virus attacks losing steam
PHP-Nuke

The outbreak of an Internet infection that disabled thousands of PCs this week appears to be waning, computer security experts said Wednesday.

While the worm continues to harass businesses and computer users around the world, the number of computers affected dropped by 30 to 40 percent on Tuesday from the day before, according to Symantec, a Cupertino maker of antiviral software.

"The virus has hit its natural limit," said Vincent Weafer, senior director of domestic security responsible for Symantec. "It peaked on Monday, and then we started to see a decrease."

The computer pox, called Blaster, MSBlast, LovSan and other nicknames, has spread rapidly in the past few days from one computer to another via the Internet, exploiting a flaw in newer versions of Microsoft Windows.

The experts said computer security experts have successfully beaten back the worm by patching the security hole on individual PCs and setting up blockades on corporate networks.

Still, Weafer predicted the worm will continue to remain a nuisance for weeks or months to come. Experts urged home and small businesses to download the latest security patch at www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp.

The disease affects users running several recent versions of Windows, including Windows 2000 and Windows XP. But it won't disrupt computers running Windows 95, 98 and ME, prompting at least one expert to joke that it was only half a virus.

To help ward off future attacks, Microsoft said it would begin shipping its Windows XP software with its protective network firewall completely activated, to make PCs less vulnerable to attacks, the New York Times reported.

Meanwhile, customers reported scattered outages at some companies. And several major corporations said they raced to contain the infection this week.

At Levi's corporate headquarters in San Francisco, employees who showed up to work on Tuesday morning were greeted with signs plastered around the building warning them not to log onto their computers.

Computer technicians then spent the day painstakingly updating the software on every computer at the clothing maker. Some employees' computers were back up and running by 9 a.m. or earlier. Others were disconnected all day.

But Levi's spokesman Jeff Beckman said the worm didn't affect any of its cash registers, allowing it to keep its stores up and running as usual. And Beckman said office employees were still able to work the old-fashioned way, giving them a break from the normal deluge of e-mail and electronic paperwork to return phone calls.

Still, a number of major firms, including, Citibank, Clorox, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Hughes Electronics's DirecTV unit and McKesson, reported little or no impact.

However, some other major companies refused to say whether their operations had been affected. "We can't get into details of our business operations," said Gap spokeswoman Claudia Hawkins.

When asked if Wells Fargo had experienced problems with the worm, spokeswoman Lucy Browne said: "I can't answer your question." Browne added that she was only authorized to say that none of its customer information had been compromised and that the bank was monitoring the infection.

Because of the silence, one expert said it is difficult to gauge the damage done by the worm.

"In general, they're going to keep it quiet when they have problems," said Lloyd Taylor, vice president of technology for Keynote Systems, a San Mateo firm that tracks Internet traffic. He said corporate network operators are likely to be embarrassed, particularly because Microsoft issued a security warning about the flaw more than a week ago.

"When the patch is out three weeks and you still get hit, who is going to want to explain that?" he asked.

So far, Taylor said the infection hasn't affected the overall flow of information on the Internet.

But Taylor believes that so many home computers have been affected that the Internet could be jammed on Saturday, when the worm is programmed to take over infected computers and use them, like zombies, to attack Microsoft's software update site.

Taylor suspects more than 1 million computers worldwide might be affected, several times the estimate from other security experts. He is particularly concerned that infected home computers in Australia, South Korea and Singapore could create traffic jams that could temporarily block or crash the transcontinental trunk lines that connect these regions to the North American Internet.

"It (Blaster) can probably take down the edges of the Net," Taylor said.

But for home users whose infected computers may be the sources of the expected attack, the experience is likely to be yet another annoyance.

"The attack will shut down any connectivity for your home," said Taylor.

xstem: Merrill Lynch bans AOL, Yahoo, MSN...
PHP-NukeMerrill Lynch on Friday will ban access to outside e-mail services from popular sites such as America Online, Yahoo and MSN, in response to regulatory requirements and to protect its network from viruses, according to a company memo.

The policy shift will affect the 48,000 Merrill Lynch employees worldwide who use the company's Internet network. A Merrill Lynch representative said the policy is an extension of existing bans in departments such as the trading desk. Other investment banks, such as Goldman Sachs, have similar companywide policies.

"We believe it is appropriate for that policy to be extended throughout the firm, without exception, to help ensure that electronic communications to and from Merrill Lynch facilities are subject to proper monitoring and surveillance," said a copy of the memo, forwarded to CNET News.com.

The policy will also affect access to outside message boards, chat rooms and forums, and any access to accounts from Internet service providers. The memo also included Juno, EarthLink and Comcast in its list of banned ISPs.

Representatives from AOL, MSN and Yahoo declined to comment.

The move by Merrill Lynch is not unprecedented; other major corporations, especially those in financial services, are reining in access to outside Web and Internet services.

Investment banks and brokerage houses have taken steps to control instant messaging applications from AOL, MSN and Yahoo as well. Financial firms have demanded more security and accountability features inside these IM clients, causing many companies to develop enterprise IM products. In April 2002, a group of top investment banks including Merrill Lynch, Salomon Smith Barney, J.P. Morgan Chase, Credit Suisse First Boston, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley and UBS Warburg agreed to use technology from Communicator to provide secure IM.

Yahoo and MSN in particular attract daytime audiences who access the Web from work. All three companies, including AOL, are trying to develop premium services such as e-mail storage and enhanced software to sell to their users.

xstem: US courts turn blind eye to hacking in order to convict child porn criminal.
PHP-NukeSophos, a global leader in anti-virus protection for businesses, warns that last week's verdict from a US federal appeal panel could have far reaching implications for the IT security industry. During a child pornography case, evidence supplied by an anonymous hacker was deemed submissible.

Reports on US news site CNET News.com explain that an anonymous hacker, known only as Unknownuser, planted a malicious Trojan horse, Subseven, on the computer of William Jarrett, a visitor to an internet message board. The hacker then used this Trojan to remotely search Jarrett's computer for pornographic downloads and followed up by sending tip offs to the FBI.

"Some people might think it's a good idea to let Trojan horses which are being used to trap criminals to slip through the net. In the future law enforcement agencies may even try to apply pressure on vendors to deliberately not detect certain Trojan horses. The reality is there's no way of knowing whether code is being used for good or bad, so we have no choice other than to flush it all out," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant, Sophos Anti-Virus. "The Subseven Trojan has been used for subversive purposes in the past; this decision to turn a blind eye to it in some instances but not in others is completely unworkable for IT security vendors."

The US District Court of Virginia originally ruled that the hacker's evidence could not be considered as it was in breach of the Fourth Amendment (which forbids US Government officials from undertaking unreasonable searches or seizures). However, under appeal, it was ruled that the hacker was acting independently of the Government, so the Fourth Amendment did not apply. This was found even though a string of email correspondence between the hacker and the FBI was uncovered.

Indeed, an email from FBI agent Faulkner to Unknownuser, described in the Appeal Court as "the proverbial 'wink and a nod'", explained: "I can not [sic] ask you to search out cases such as the one you have sent us. That would make you an agent of the Federal Government and make how you obtain your information illegal...but if you should happen across such pictures as the ones you have sent to us...please feel free to send them to us."

The emails between the FBI and the hacker were described by the Appeal Court as a "'pen-pal' type correspondence". At no time did the FBI tell the hacker to halt activity, which the Judge described as "discomforting". However, in summing up, it was ruled that the anonymous hacker's evidence should stand.

The full appeal judgement can be found on the court's website. It can also be downloaded in PDF format.

xstem: Apple Mac and Unix users immune from Mimail worm attack, advises Sophos Anti-Vir
PHP-NukeSophos technical support has advised users of Apple Macintosh and Unix computers that they cannot be infected by the W32/Mimail-A worm.

"Mimail is a Windows 32 worm, meaning that it cannot execute unless Microsoft Windows is present," explained Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos Anti-Virus. "Furthermore, the Mimail worm relies upon a vulnerability in Microsoft applications which is simply not present on Apple Mac and Unix-based computers. Of course it is technically possible for unaffected computer users to forward the infected email to colleagues who use PCs, but this is unlikely to be a major vector by which the virus will spread."

Sophos has advised that computer owners who use Microsoft products for mail and web access, make sure they have the latest security updates installed. Microsoft issued a patch months ago to protect against the HTML exploit used by this worm. Microsoft has also published step-by-step instructions for home users on how to help protect their computers with critical updates.

xstem: OMB guides agencies to meet IT security law
PHP-Nuke

By Jason Miller
GCN Staff

The Office of Management and Budget yesterday set guidelines for agencies to report their progress in securing IT systems.

In a letter to agency executives, OMB director Joshua Bolten outlined how agencies should implement the Federal Information Security Management Act, which became law as a provision in the E-Government Act of 2002 last December.

OMB detailed steps in four sections of the memo that agency CIOs and inspectors general must follow in evaluating IT security. These sections include changes introduced by FISMA, reporting instructions, quarterly plans and performance updates, and definitions in law and policy in the guidance.

Bolten also said he wants to make sure agencies spend enough money and resources on IT security.

“I am directing my staff to work with your agency to ensure that system remediation plans are implemented and appropriate resources are identified through the budget process to resolve critical IT security weaknesses,” Bolten said.

Bolten also laid out the criteria for agencies to earn a green score on the stoplight scoring system the White House uses to grade agencies in meeting the President’s Management Agenda.

Agencies will not improve their scores in e-government under the PMA unless they improve their scores in the security subsection first, Bolten said. OMB grades agencies quarterly on how they implement their security plans, he added.

To get to green, agencies must:

Demonstrate consistent progress in remediating IT security weaknesses
Have the IG verify there is a departmentwide IT plan
Have 90 percent of IT systems certified and accredited by the IG and by outside experts.
To get to yellow, agencies must:
Demonstrate consistent progress in remediating IT security weaknesses
Have the IG verify a departmentwide IT plan or have 80 percent of IT systems certified and accredited by the IG and outside experts.

PHP-Nuke

The SuSe published operating system Linux is growing more popular by leaps and bounds. Linux was never as popular as operating systems like Windows from Microsoft, but Linux has always been popular with more computer oriented users.

In the hacking world Linux is a very popular operating system, because its is more organized and has a better layout then Windows and Apple OS's. Now that Linux publisher SuSe has received the right certifications to sell to government organizations its popularity will surely explode into the public and may one day rival operating systems like Jaguar from Apple and Windows XP from Microsoft.

 xstem: Xstem Security Additions..
PHP-Nuke

New Security Additions now available:

Xstem Password Generator

This is a small simple Java Script tool that randomly generate, complicated passwords, mixed characters, with the ability to include special characters and password restrictions.

Why it's important to have a strong secure password? The reason for having a secure password, is not only to be safe from hackers, but the programs they use as well. For example:

An http brute force program uses a large list of common words, phrases, and number combinations, that very easily may figure out your password. If your password is secure enough, as that one randomized by this generator, chances are you are safe.

So go ahead, get securer…

Xstem Super Encryption

This JavaScript library provides encryption using simple, text-oriented method called column transposition. The idea is to write the plain text in block on the row-first bases. The text is then read column-first. The trick is in that the columns are not read from left to right, but in the order specified by the encryption key. Transliteration is also used.

Not only does it do that, but it gets right to the point of security. Before you encrypt the text an optional password field may be filled out. Without the original password which was entered when the script was encrypted, it will not work. Trying to decrypt it without the password will result in another mix up of the encryption, and you will get no where.

Xstem is continuing to develop simple tools like these which can people stay secure in many ways...

Red Hat Goes on the Offensive Against SCO
PHP-NukeRed Hat Goes on the Offensive Against SCO
By Michael Singer

SAN FRANCISCO -- Red Hat (Quote, Company Info) Monday says it has gone on the offensive and filed a formal complaint against SCO Group (Quote, Company Info) in a Delaware court.

SCO Group has caused a stir in the UNIX and Linux industries with claims that it has received U.S. copyright registrations for its UNIX System V and UnixWare source code. The Lindon, Utah-based company has even launched a $1 billion legal attack against IBM (Quote, Company Info) and has hinted it will soon put Linux distributors in its crosshairs.

The seven count complaint is broken up into two parts. The first two are designed to show that Red Hat's technologies do not infringe any intellectual property of SCO.

The other five invoke the Lanham Act and ask the courts for a permanent injunction holding SCO accountable for what CEO Matthew Szulik calls "unsubstantiated innuendo and rumor."

"For the past two months, we have listened to these unfounded claims," Szulik said. "We've been patient. We've listened. But when our customers and the whole open-source community are threatened with innuendo and rumor, it's time to act. Our goal is to find out the truth. Our suggestion to SCO is to 'prove it.'"

Szulik said his company was directly mentioned in a recent SCO conference call to investors that Red Hat says created an "atmosphere of fear, doubt and uncertainty about Linux."

"We filed this complaint to stop SCO from making unsubstantiated and untrue public statements attacking Red Hat Linux and the integrity of the Open Source software development process," Red Hat General Counsel Mark Webbink said in a statement. "Red Hat is confident that its current and future customers will continue to realize the significant value that our Red Hat Linux platform provides without interruption."

A source close to the filing told internetnews.com that the basis of Red Hat's argument hinges on evidence it has that SCO may have distributed some of its proprietary code under an open source license.

SCO executives claim Linux is essentially software piracy, and it is ready to open a new revenue stream by giving Linux users immunity to copyright violations through licensing.

"SCO has consistently stated that our UNIX System V source code and derivative UNIX code have been misappropriated into Linux," SCO spokesperson Blake Stowell told internetnews.com. "We have been showing a portion of this code since early June. SCO has not been trying to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt to end users. We have been educating end users on the risks of running an operating system that is an unauthorized derivative of UNIX. Linux includes source code that is a verbatim copy of UNIX and carries with it no warranty or indemnification. SCO's claims are true and we look forward to proving them in court."

SCO's crusade against Linux began with IBM. On March 6, the company sent a letter to IBM Chairman and CEO Sam Palmisano, warning him that IBM had allegedly breached its contract with SCO by contributing portions of its Unix-based AIX code to the open source movement, and by introducing concepts from Project Monterey, a joint effort by SCO and IBM to develop a 64-bit Unix-based operating system for Intel-based processing platforms, into Linux. IBM scrapped Project Monterey in May 2001.

As part of its offensive strategy Red Hat also said it has pledged $1 million to establish a new Open Source Now Fund. The goal is to cover legal expenses associated with infringement claims brought against companies developing software under the GPL license and non-profit organizations supporting the efforts of companies developing software under a GPL license.

Szulik said Red Hat would seek support from other commercial partners but did not guarantee indemnity nor did he detail the application criteria for non-profits.

Already, legal observers are debating whether SCO Group can support its legal claims.

Forrester analyst Stacey Quandt told internetnews.com the biggest question is how the legal posturing actually helps Red Hat.

"Red Hat wants to protect its install base and customer adoption of Red Hat Linux, but they are not the target of the initial SCO claim," she said. "Customers are being asked what is their tolerance for risk for deploying Linux. Based on what they are saying, Red Hat's action kind of muddles it in a way, but it doesn't look like it will change the original lawsuit."

The suits will be high topic of conversation at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco here this week. Szulik is scheduled to deliver his keynote Tuesday.

In separate news, Red Hat said it has formed a global partnership with network storage firm Network Appliance (Quote, Company Info).

The two companies say they are mutually committed to developing and delivering Linux storage protocols and collaborating on supporting customers.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Network Appliance said the companies also plan to engage in joint marketing efforts with a focus on database and layered applications areas, with an emphasis on data protection, technical applications, and storage consolidation. Formal Network Appliance/Red Hat certification and assertive co-marketing efforts for the joint solutions should debut in the third quarter of 2003.

The reason for this is you cant really have security on a small computer like a Palm Pilot. So if you want to hack some thing and do not want to get caught hack a Palm Pc because Palm and other companies have done nothing security wise to stop portable device hackers.  xstem: Hackers in the desert.
PHP-Nuke As the government discuss computer and internet security in the post 9/11 world hackers are battling it out at in Def Con in the baking Las Vegas desert. Def Con the annual world hacking conference held in Las Vegas August 1 to the 3. Def Con is not even a conference at all if you think about it it is a really big hacking party. Def Con was once a small not very popular conference. But when Television networks like TechTV started covering the event it gave it the attention it needed. Even the government is into Def Con sending scouts there to learn about network and internet security. For those of you who don't know what goes on at Def Con here is a little info. There are big games of War driving ,Capture the flag, speakers giving talks on many topics. So much goes on every year it is hard to keep track. Def Con is amazing I would recommend paying Las Vegas a visit next Def Con. (Xstem Article Written by: mcx452)

 xstem: Linux gets a boost.
PHP-NukeLinux gets a boost. Linux seller SuSe and server maker IBM have obtained the certification to sell their products to United States Military and Government organizations. This will give Linux and it’s seller SuSe a boost in the computer software and hardware industry. Linux was never as popular as most main line operating system. So this boost may also make linux a more popular Os in the future. (Xstem Article Written by: mcx452)
